The suspect opened fire near the front of the building by producing a firearm, which initially misfired, possibly leading to fewer victims. Upon not being able to discharge the firearm, the perpetrator took his time to fix it, which took several tries, and only then opened fire. His failure to open the initial salvo may have saved lives. When he finally started shooting, he fired multiple times into different groups of people, killing one on the scene instantly. Four people were then rushed to the hospital, with one of them passing away during medical procedures. A security guard initially responded to the scene and opened fire, with the gunman shooting back. At that moment, the perpetrator shot a driver in their car, killing them on the spot. In the minutes since the shooting had started, the police managed to get to the scene, with a police officer opening fire in turn, and were able to shoot and neutralize him. The first responders included Washoe County sheriff’s deputies, NevadaState Police, RenoFire, and others. Exact details about the perpetrator’s reasons for the attack remain unclear, and no further details about his condition were available. The attack took place at 7:25 am that day, KTVN-TV/Renosaid. While three victims have so far been confirmed, along with three injured, the number of both is still being updated. Commenting on the tragedy, a Grand Sierra Resort spokespersonsaid this in a statement: “We are incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team, whose immediate actions helped prevent further harm. We also want to thank the Reno Police Department for their rapid assistance and coordination, which was instrumental in quickly eliminating the threat and protecting lives.” The Grand Sierra Resort remains the largest gaming floor in northern Nevada, making incidents such as these potentially more deadly when they occur.
